The reason for this article is that I ate Edamame today. Why do Izakaya often give us edamame as otoushi, or a kind of cover charge making appetizer food ? I've been enjoying Izakaya since I became a college student in Tokyo, it means this unique custom of Izakanya, giving us edamame for the first food, has never been changed for such a long time.
When I lived in other countries, I liked hanging out for food and drinks at night. I always missed something at bars overseas, which was EDAMAME !!!
In Japan, I have edamame just for a trivial food to start drinking beer. At the time in other countries, I noticed edamame is really needed to decolate drinking atomosphere and make my mouth get ready for beer. I'm certainly edamame addicted when I drink beer.
It's not especially delicious food at all, but I, or many of Japanese, need edamame for night time booz.
Meanwhile in summer time, I often have edamame with beer and I thinkedamame is really delicious then. It's such a simple food but edamame surely has something important for our izakaya culture.
Interestingly, I recently sometimes hear that people from UK or USA say that edamame is their real favorite food. Unbelievable ! But if it's true, do they like drinking with edamame ? Or do they simply like edamame as a food ??? It's such a mystery for me.
