I really adore Bill Evans Piano play. Actually I play his favorite numbers with my jazz band in Japan. At the last rehearsal of my band, I played My foolish Heart, which was also recorded by Bill Evans in a famous album, Waltz for Debby.
Once we try to play the piano in Bill Evans piano style, we soon notice his sound making stands out extremely beautiful. When we hear his play in his records, we might think it's playable for us too with the piano. Technically it could be possible, but it's totally impossible to recreate his world of sensitivity.
I know it's rediculous to copy his style in the badn play, but it's a real pleaure to play his music in his style because I like to feel his music sense when I play it.
Fans usually choose his 4 works from Riverside label as their best ones. I agree. However, I need to add "You must believe in spring" and " I will say goodbye". These two works were recorded just before he died. Around this time, Bill Evans was in a seriously hard time with his life. That's why songs played in these albums are so sad, especially ones in " You must believe in spring" let us imagine as if Bill Evans was playing wih tears. Althoug sound is a little gloomy, but the quality of the music is heavenly beautiful as if he knew he was soon going there.
Today, I enjoyed Bill Evans in my small room in Nasu.
